HOW CAN WE PLAN EFFECTIVE PBL UNITS TO ENGAGE OUR LEARNERS AND ACHIEVE ACADEMIC GROWTH IN A GLOBAL COMMUNITY?
OUR JOURNEY
The Republic Middle School Project-Based Learning (PBL) Cohort began its journey in July 2014. The following summer, the second cohort of 21 new teachers was added to the program, including teachers in grades 4 - 12. We now have 35 teachers in our program grades 6 - 12. This website showcases that journey and the learning by teachers and students. Our units are developed in the framework of the Essential Elements of PBL. This type of learning is rigorous, not only for the students but for the teacher as well. Implementing PBL effectively will require a completely different shift in the learning environment and require teachers and students to have a growth mindset.
Our PBL Units are based on the Missouri Learning Standards. Are they engaging and worthwhile for the students? Yes. Are these units perfect? No. They are constantly being revised to meet the needs of our students. With each unit, teachers reflect and gain knowledge about the art and science of PBL and a deeper understanding of content. Again, this is their journey of learning.
