Program OverviewThe mission of the Republic Special Olympics Unified Sports Program is to promote acceptance and inclusion of individuals with intellectual disabilities through sports. It is our goal that this program will provide our students with the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities that can be a platform for healthy expression socially, emotionally and physically. Through sports, our students will be able to develop friendships and connections within the academic setting as well as the community. Respect, dignity and self-advocacy are skills necessary for active daily living throughout their life span that can be acquired through this program.
It is the goal of the Republic Special Olympics Unified Sports Program to teach our students with disabilities a variety of skills associated with sportsmanship. These skills include but are not limited to:
• interact in an appropriate manner with peers socially
• goal setting
• perseverance to attaining their goals
• positive citizenship, sportsmanship and self-esteem
In the development of these skills we aim to create a community of caring and respect between youth with and without disabilities in which they can work together as leaders advocating as change agents now and in the future.
